Nov. 21st: Azam Ali w/ Raquy and the Cavemen

Do not miss this rare opportunity to see a live performance by one of world music's leading voices. Internationally acclaimed vocalist Azam Ali (singer for Niyaz and Vas as well as guest vocalist for Conjure One, System of A Down, The Crystal Method, Chris Vrenna, Mickey Hart and many others) brings her timeless, ethereal voice to the stage on November 21st in Philadelphia.

Born in Iran, raised in India, Azam moved to America as a teenager. Her son, Iman, was born in 2008. As Azam began to sing traditional Persian lullabies to her newborn, she reflected on the millions of children around the world who are born into exile. And so she began gathering songs that expressed a mother's closeness, and a motherland's distance. The result was her latest solo album, "From Night to The Edge of Day."

The lullabies come from a variety of backgrounds: Persian, Turkish, Kurdish, Arab, Azeri and others. The music likewise is influenced by all of these traditions. The album showcases Azam's emotional range, with vocals transitioning seamlessly from warmth and comfort to a deep yearning for home.

Azam performs at the Ibrahim Theater, located in the International House (3701 Chestnut St., Philadelphia). This intimate theatre setting offers comfortable seating, clear sight lines and excellent acoustics.

Opening the show will be Raquy and the Cavemen, a duo of virtuoso drummers / multi-instrumentalists who bring some rock energy to traditional Middle Eastern rhythms. Switching between between energetic drumming compositions and intoxicating melodic pieces, the duo employs a variety of unusual instruments including the Kemenche (an ancestor of the violin), Dumset (Middle Eastern drumset), Dumbek and 11 String Guitar. They also utilize the unique art of Mongolian Throat singing. They have performed at Central Park SummerStage and LollaPalooza and have collaborated with Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Saiid El-Artist and many others.
